Welcome to the Amherst NH Town Website

Amherst is nestled in Hillsborough County has approximately 11,685 people living within the community. The picturesque town is home to Ponemah Bog Wildlife Sanctuary, Hodgman State Forest, the Joe English Reservation and Baboosic Lake.

Like many New England towns, Amherst was the result of a land grant given to soldiers - in 1728 that had participated in King Phillip’s War. Settled about 1733, it was first called "Narragansett Number 3," It was chartered in 1760 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth and by the early 1800s the towns of Milford and Mont Vernon had broken off on their own and Amherst remained.
